We’re proud to have successfully delivered complex structural works at Broad Quay House on Bristol’s iconic harbourside for our client Aberdeen Investments , with project management by JLL .
The works included the creation of a dedicated vehicular ramp to the basement car park, improving access for the building’s commercial tenants. This logistically challenging project demanded precision engineering and a strong focus on public safety, especially given the busy harbourside location.
A great example of collaborative delivery and thoughtful design enhancing urban infrastructure.

Our supplier CW Duke & Sons took on first-year college student Niall Holmes as a joinery/carpentry apprentice - thanks to a project to work on the Wellspring Settlement project , redeveloping a former pub into a community hub, youth space, and offices.

Procured through us, the works were delivered following a grant from the Government's Youth Investment Fund (YIF).

Niall is being mentored by an experienced senior site manager and has already undertaken professional training qualifications including the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and First Aid. He is gaining on-site experience while working alongside project stakeholders including architects and engaging with the wider community.

Having impressed his colleagues, CW Duke & Sons is keen to offer Niall employment at the end of his apprenticeship.

Students from the University of Bath are welcomed along for a site tour at the neighbouring Bath Cats & Dogs Home

Director of Studies for the Architectural and Civil Engineeri Department, Gavin Knowles and 20, 1st & 2nd year students studying Architecture and Civil Engineering joined our site team for a educational tour around the Bath Cats and Dogs Home facility, currently undergoing a full refurbishment and due to be completed shortly.

Site visits help students to enhance their workplace knowledge and build their career awareness. The activities are structured to: Illustrate how key academic concepts are applied in the real world. Offer students a chance to ask questions and observe work in progress.

The opportunity presented students to understand the high complexity of this build, especially around the roof structure, where extensive planning and logistics are essential. Students also got to understand the rationale behind the Charity's visions, commercial needs and contribution it makes to the wider RSPCA.

Thank you to Amber Howells for the informative overview of the importance of the site, its impact and it's need for continued support from individual and businesses.

This extensive renovation included full groundworks, structural enhancements, extensions, room creation, split levels, lanterns and skylights, complete re-roofing, complete flooring and walling solutions, kitchens and WC's, complemented by full mechanical, electrical, audio visual, fire and security.

RICS Matrics is our early career community designed to support students, apprentices, trainees and those who are newly qualified (up to 10 years), as they move into the industry. It gives the community a platform to influence the profession, as well as an opportunity to network and gain support as they go through the assessment.

The network, made up of 27 local committees across the UK offer peer support groups, mentoring, free online Continuous Personal Development (CPD) opportunities, networking and social events, all designed to develop the leaders of tomorrow.

There is something for everyone in RICS Matrics. You may simply want to come along and meet some of your fellow surveyors, maybe attend one or two CPD seminars, network at one our inter-professional events or seek some support through your assessment. Building and bringing new technology to Bristol

The new facility will provide accommodation for a collaborative project involving EDF UK, the University of Bristol, Urenco and UKAEA, researching grid scale storage.

The aim of the project is to develop new technologies that will help balance fluctuations in the supply of energy from renewables such as wind and solar to help decarbonise the national grid.

A Renters Reform Bill for “landlords and renters alike”, with court reforms promised to abolish Section 21 evictions

Labour

Delivering 1.5m new homes in England over the next five years
Immediately update the National Policy Planning Framework to restore mandatory housing targets

Given the recent troubles within the City, changing lives and communities through Construction should underpin everything we do.

Pleasure to hear positive community action undertaken by MCS Ltd and an impassioned speech from Sarah Lambshead from Atkins Réalis on how we all can do better within our communities through our social impact.

W hat is Building Bristol?

Building Bristol is a service to support local developers who are preparing planning applications so they can also create robust employment and skills plans.

A Building Bristol Coordinator is on hand to support contractors and end employers with developing their plans and delivering (and hopefully exceeding) their agreed targets. By working with all major developments, there are also opportunities for shared events and campaigns to boost local recruitment.

Wellspring Settlement and Barefoot Architects have worked tirelessly to understand and qualify the needs of the all local residents and how the this building can be redesigned to support all generations through advice, services and social wellbeing.

" Upon joining the CW Duke team last year, a key driver was to identify, tender or support more local projects that make a real impact on the welfare and wellbeing within the communities they serve.
Whilst this is just one example, a meticulous budgetary effort was needed, and achieved, to greenlight this great project and ensure it maximised value to the Charity without reducing the vision of the building and its future role within the community.

With so many hazards and risks on building sites, it is essential to have extensive risk assessments and safety regulations in place.

At CW Duke, we take heath and safety very seriously. We are proud to have multiple accreditations, such as CHAS, Safe Contractor and Constructionline that ensure maximum safety on site. It is not possible to completely remove all the risks, but detailed health & safety protocols allow us to minimise risks of injuries.

Before every project our team has an induction that includes reviewing the documents, extensive risk assessment and getting the right training. Risk assessment is done before the beginning of the project and throughout the process to ensure maximum safety. Effective communication between the team and management is extremely important. Most of our team has been with the company for over a decade. They know our meticulous approach to health and safety precautions. At CW Duke we are trying to maintain a consistent culture of health and safety as a team.

The Construction industry is, by nature, one of the largest users of natural resources and, therefore, one of the largest contributors to pollution. Adopting sustainable practices for construction companies can help tackling environmental issues.

What is sustainable construction?

Sustainable construction can be described as utilising renewable resources when building new structures, thus reducing the impact on the environment. Sustainable construction also includes proper waste management and creating building s that are environmentally friendly.

Why is sustainability in construction important?

The construction industry accounts for 36% of the world energy usage and 40% of CO2 emissions. The machinery is heavily reliant on fossil fuels that are often used inefficiently. The industry generates 30-40% of solid waste. In the United Kingdom our industry produces three times more waste than all UK households. For example, concrete, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, is used in over 70% of buildings. All of this creates pollution and damages the environment. Therefore, it is important to build sustainably.

What steps does CW Duke take to be more sustainable?

At CW Duke, we are taking steps towards becoming more sustainable. We have worked together with Wanderlands to identify our impact on the environment, gain understanding of the company’s carbon footprint and determine a strategy towards reducing harm on the environment.

We are aiming at ensuring that our whole fleet being Clean Air Zone compliant within the next couple of months. CW Duke has recently completed a month long trial of an electric van through a council lead scheme so we can evaluate whether going electric would work for our business.

We have recently put recycling bins in the office and removed under desk bins. This way we can help reduce the amount of waste in landfills and contribute to more effective waste management.

We have recently been approved for a grant that can allow us to make our building more sustainable. We are currently looking into installing photovoltaic panels on the roof, thus enabling us to rely more on a renewable energy.

Help Bristol Homeless

We are delighted to be helping out Help Bristol’s Homeless charity! This is an amazing charity organisation trying to provide temporary housing, wellbeing support, free clothes and food for people in need.

We are delighted to be helping out Help Bristol’s Homeless charity. This amazing charity helps to solve homelessness in Bristol. Bristol is known for having one of the highest numbers of homeless/rough sleepers due to increasing housing prices and financial struggles associated with the pandemic. Being homeless can have a severe impact both on physical and mental health.

Help Bristol Homeless organisation repurposes old shipping containers and creates micro-flats to serve as temporary accommodation. Their mission is to provide a safe place to stay, from where people can start building their life. The charity provides care packages, including food, sleeping bags, clothing, and other essential items.

Our team recently finished painting the converted containers for the organisation. We hope that our work will brighten up the repurposed shipping containers and help the temporary residents feel more comfortable and at home!

#gettoknowtheteam at CW Duke. This week, we interviewed Jon Porter. Jon joined CW Duke in 1995 as an Estimator and Quantity Surveyor and soon became Managing Director. We asked Jon some questions to get to know him better.

How would your friends describe you?

I think they would say that I’m honest

What led you to this career?

My family was in construction industry and so this inspired me to go to college for training which allowed me to follow in their footsteps. I did my initial training with Kier and worked for them for 10 years before joining CW Duke as an estimator/surveyor and helped them to expand the business into other sectors, such as healthcare and social housing. I was extremely proud to be involved in the management buy out from Terry Duke in the early 00's when Terry decided to retire.

What motivates you?

My biggest motivation is seeing the company doing well. I am very committed to the company; seeing high rates of client satisfaction, client loyalty and achieving outstanding results is what keeps me going.

What trait do you admire most in others?

I admire honesty and determination. I think that everyone should be honest about their intentions. Determination is important for me because I am a very determined and goal-oriented person. I worked hard to achieve what I am right now. Both these traits resonate with my personality and values.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

I really like Bristol; this is where I grew up and lived all my life. Honestly, I would not move anywhere. I like travelling here and there, but there is no place like home for me.

What is your favourite project at CW Duke?

One of my favourite projects is social housing that we did with Curo. Partnership with Curo allowed us to go into the social housing sector and have an impact on the community. The project was challenging, but very interesting and rewarding. I am proud to be a part of this project because it was great to create housing for people in need.

And the final question:

What is the best piece of advice that you can give?

Work hard, be determined, put all the effort in.

Crane lift at Corn Street.

Yesterday (17/08) saw the first of our crane lifts at Corn Street, Bristol to transport large mechanical equipment into the buildings of 41 and Gilbert House.

Both buildings are in the process of undergoing a huge high end refurbishment.

October 2019 - Our finished projects get showcased

October 2019

Over the last couple of months we have completed lots of projects, handed the keys back to clients, moved students into their new homes and watched as new businesses fill their office.

Our projects are always amazing to watch, they start off in one form and develop and grow into the visions our clients started off with at conception stage, and we love it.

Nothing quite beats the handover day feeling when a client walks around their new building for the first time with all snags complete, painting done, lights on and it all sparkling clean. Seeing their visions in reality can never be beaten.

At Duke we like to hold onto those feelings and pictures and we put them into a case study, we give you a bit of background on the project and let you into the story of the build. But more importantly we get to share some pictures with you of the end results.

Two of our sites in Bristol achieve brilliant results

3rd September 2019

A huge congratulations to two of our site managers, Andre Alford and Sam Hutchinson, for achieving excellent results on their recent audits by Considerate Contractors.

This scheme is to improve the image of construction, making sure not only do we achieve quality on our actual builds that we perform and look after the site as a whole. We are marked in the following areas; Care about Appearance, Respect the Community, Protect the Environment, Secure everyone's Safety, Value their Workforce.

Both of our sites at Merchants House, Bristol and Barstaple Almshouse, Bristol achieved an excellent score of 37 each meaning that they achieved a score in each section with Performance Beyond Compliance. This was achieved through the hard work and dedication of the site managers and the commitment of our sub contractors & supply chain.

Congratulations to everyone involved, it is amazing that we are achieving these scores on our projects. We received very high praise from our Monitor and we should all be proud.

RUH Bath New £2.7m department opens

CW Duke attend the official opening...

On Tuesday night the construction team who worked on the RUH Bath new Facial Surgery and Orthodontics department, were welcomed for the official opening.

The £2.7 million new department has a bright and welcoming reception along with four new consulting rooms. A fully equipped orthodontics suite and other supporting areas to allow this team to carry on their fantastic care work.

Lead consultant Serryth Colbert said: "It's just amazing to be in this incredible facility. We wouldn't be here without all our supporters and our fantastic team, who provide care at an astonishing rate"

THE DUKE TEAM GROW AGAIN
