CW Duke — Refurbishment and Shopfitting

United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust

Bristol Royal Infirmary is a busy 1960s hospital undergoing extensive modernisation which included a £1.8 million refurbishment of the Surgical and Medical Day Units.

The work involved a complete refit of the area including new partitions, ceilings, floor coverings, specialist air handling system as well as extensive work to the existing medical gas installation whilst maintaining this service throughout the hospital.

Restricted access and limited on-site storage was a main consideration with the works located on the fifth floor. It was vital that work did not interfere with the day to day running of the hospital, so deliveries had to be organised to be just in time and crane lifts were organised for delivery of specialist mechanical plant. This required additional liaison with the Local Authorities Highway department.

Other considerations included cleanliness and minimal disruption outside of the specific work area (noise, dust), restricted working hours and interaction with patients and public.
